One of the toughest things we face when trying to start a more active lifestyle is the intimidation about taking those first steps into a gym or fitness center. “Gymtimidation,” the nervousness that stems from the fear of feeling like a fitness rookie, can often hinder our efforts to work towards to the level of fitness, vibrancy, and health we aspire to.

Whether you’re thinking about joining our kickboxing classes in Mt. Laurel or our personal training in Camden County, check out these tips for overcoming your fitness jitters, courtesy of Kennedy Fitness: A Jefferson Health Affiliate:

1. Introduce yourself.

Remember, class instructors and personal trainers are there to support you. Don’t be afraid to let them and the people around you know that you’re new. Not only will you find instructors who are friendly and only too glad to help, but you’ll also find a community of people who are trying to incorporate better fitness into their lives just as you are!

2. Invest in some good fitness wear.

Doing things to make yourself feel confident can go a long way in encouraging you in your path to a more active lifestyle. Investing in some proper activewear can, in turn, make you feel more invested in what you’re doing and overcome some of your fears.

3. Remember that no one is looking at you.

When folks come to work out, they are focused on their own goals and routines, not those of others. Although it’s easy to fall prey to the thought that others might be watching your every move, remember that many of your fellow fitness enthusiasts can be just as nervous!  Everyone was a beginner at one time or another, just stay focused on your workout and the more consistently you attend the gym, the more comfortable you’ll feel.

4. Write down and focus on your goals.

Writing down your goals on paper can be an excellent way of keeping yourself accountable, and the more your focus on what it is you want to do and accomplish, the less you’ll be thinking about what others may think.

5. Jump into a class.

Sometimes, the best way to overcome your fear is to dive right in. If you’re feeling nervous or anxious about joining a class, procrastination can be your biggest enemy. Just take a deep breath, and put your name down for a class today!
